Boa Vista is the most eastern island of the Archipelago and is often dubbed 'the sand dune isle' for it's distinctly desert-like appearance. It’s the second largest island of the archipelago with a surface of 620 km2 with its longest distance, from North to South of 31 km, and 29 km from West to East. It is the closet island to the African coast and experiences the hot, dry winds blowing off the Sahara.
It is essentially a flat arid island with the highest point on the island at Pico d'Estancia at 390 metres. The interior is barren rock interspersed with date trees with volcanic formations in Rabil and Fundo das Figueiras and is covered with sand dunes which give it a lunar landscape. It has 55 km of beautiful white sand beaches and emerald green water and is a sunbathers paradise as Boa Vista boasts one of the best beaches to be found on Cape Verde at Curralinho. This is an ideal destination for sailing, diving, surfing and fishing enthusiasts. The quaint port at Sal Rei is the Boavista's capital where the local seafood dishes of limpets and crab can be sampled.
