Sal is the oldest island in Cape Verde and belongs to the northern group of islands. It was formed 50 million years ago during the eruption of a volcano which is now inactive. The island is one of the flattest in the archipelago with the highest elevation of 406 m at Monte Grande and is about 30Km long by 12km wide.

Sal is named after the salt mines that once operated here and its current population of 8,000 traditionally grew up around salt collection and typical fishing villages such as Palmeira. Its international airport at Vila dos Espagos now makes Sal one of the major gateways to the Cape Verde islands and its magnificent white sand beaches and guaranteed sun has turned Sal into a major tourist destination for sun worshippers. Primarily a beach resort, the town of Santa Maria is a centre for tourism and offers excellent conditions for a host of water sports in the crystal waters and sandy coves along its 8km of beach which enjoy 350 days of sunshine a year.
